More than 200,000 Americans apply for Black Friday guns, setting a new record

  1. The FBI received more than 200,000 Black Friday profiling inquiries, creating a new record for singles in a single day.
  2. The US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) received 203,086 petition requests on Nov. 24, the occasion of Black Friday, up from 185,713 last year and 185,345 in 2015. Recorded on Black Friday evening. In 2016, 27.5 million applications for background checks were processed.
  3. Background checks are required to purchase a gun at a licensed US arms dealer. The number of weapons sold on Nov. 24 may be higher because a person can buy more weapons in a transaction.
  4. The number of applicants to the FBI's National Nuclear Criminal History Checklist (NICS) increased only a few days after Justice Secretary Jeff Sessions ordered a re-examination of the system. It used to allow a US Air Force veteran to be tried by a military tribunal to buy rifles and killed 25 people in a church shootout in Sutherland Springs, Texas.
  5. After the shootings, the Air Force acknowledged that it did not provide the FBI with detailed information about the military court case, which could have helped stop the sale of weapons to veteran Devin Kelley.
  6. Black Friday is the largest shopping day of the year in the US, with many items being discounted, including ammunition.
