**WELCOME TO THE STEP UP AND RECOGNIZE THE ROHINGYA! TWITTER STORM** THE HASHTAG FOR THIS TWITTER STORM IS #IAmRohingya Greetings and peace be with you all! Here at the Burma Task Force we are scheduling our SECOND Twitter Storm for THIS WEDNESDAY SEPTEMBER 24th, 2014 between 5pm EST and 10pm EST! As the nation of Burma makes its transition toward democracy, atrocities of other sorts are occurring simultaneously on a daily basis in against its minority populations. It is our purpose as an organization to highlight the specific issues surrounding the Rohingya people who are consentrated in the western state of Arakan. Our effort as an organization is to draw awareness of their plight to the world in order to avert a possible genocide in the region. The erasure of an entire people, or genocide, often happens in increments so small that often times, most people hardly notice it happening. One of the ways this is done is to deny people their right to self-determination. Right now in Burma, the Rohingya people are being denied their very own identity; denying that the Rohingya are even a legitimate ethnic group that belong in Burma. Most recently, the Rohingya people were excluded from the latest national census, and now there is a state-wide effort to eradicate the very word "Rohingya" from any and all public discourse. In August, US Secretary of State, John Kerry shockingly commented that the US should set the name issue "aside". That is why we have decided that the most appropriate hashtag for this Twitter Storm is #IAmRohingya The main goal of our second Twitter Storm is: ⦁ To challenge efforts by the Burma government to remove the term "Rohingya" from all discourse around the issue. ⦁ To pressure US Secretary of State to rethink his approach on the Rohingya name issue ⦁ To pressure US President Barack Obama to use the term "Rohingya" when he makes his visit to Burma this November ⦁ To raise general awareness of the Rohingya issue on social media by flooding timelines with the topic as well as the hashtag #IAmRohingya ⦁ To get #IAmRohingya trending on Twitter ⦁ To get social media users to take action and speak out against the atrocities occurring in Burma against the Rohingya people Help us reach these goals by taking part in our Twitter Storm THIS WEDNESDAY SEPTEMBER 24th, 2014 between 12pm EST and 5pm EST! We have compiled numerous tweets below that you can copy and paste (retweeting will not be as effective); try to space out your tweets in order to keep your account from getting suspended.
