So..... big drama in the Bitcoin forums today! This guy with the user name "anyroll" came in last week, saying he's done really well with day trading Bitcoins, and he starts a 10 Bitcoin Giveaway! You read that right.... 10 Bitcoins. Giving away. For free. The game was basically to guess a number between 1 and 1000 that he had already picked, and post that number with your Bitcoin wallet address. The person guessing closest would win the Bitcoins. Here is the thread for his giveaway... https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=198694.0 Well, sometime early today, people started getting private messages from the "anyroll" account, saying they won the contest and to go to BTC-e to claim the prize, and providing a link to get there... well, you guessed it. The link was fake, sending people to a phishing website, which would collect login names and passwords so the phisher could loot their accounts on the real BTC-e. People started posting about this toward the end of the giveaway thread, as well starting new topics giving everyone the heads-up that "anyroll is a scammer"... https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=204533.0 The "anyroll" account posted that his account had been hacked, and the private messages with the phishing link were sent by the hacker. Several users posted, however, that "anyroll" was still sending PMs with the phishing link AT THE SAME TIME that he was posting in the threads that his account was hacked. Well, the moderators got involved, suspending the "anyroll" account and locking the original givaway thread. Discussion of what happened centered on the second link I posted above. So, what's the latest word, you ask? It turns out that "anyroll" may have been legit... one of the other users came in to say that "anyroll" started a new account and messaged them to let them know they had won the giveaway. When the winner went to check their wallet, sure enough.... 10 shiny new Bitcoins were there! So, it looks like "anyroll" was legit (would a scammer actually send out 10 Bitcoins?)... the moderators were informed of this, so perhaps "anyroll" will get his account back and continue to hold contests. We will see..... .
