i need to wire a cab, i cant find any clear info on this.

amp is 4ohm marshall avt 50watts

speakers are 4 12" 8ohm celestion "greenback" orig

mostly interested in volume as opposed to any special 'tone'. thanks for any help.

There is no way to get 4ohms total by using four of them. in order to get 4 you would have to put two of them in parallel, thats it. If you want volume, thats not a good idea. Greenbacks are prone to breaking when you push them too hard.

In that case you can wire pairs of them in series giving you 16 ohms per pair, and then wiring each pair in parallel to give you 8 ohms. In 90% of cases of solid state power amps thats fine. The impedances don't have to match as long as the speakers arent lower than the output. Then you'll blow them.

actually, i have 2 in parallel at the moment, i play with the volume at about 6 for jam but i need to crank it for live. i had the get the other 2 reconed but im ready to pop them in now. would you be able to find me a diagram of the setup you described with wiring them series AND parallel? i am COMPLETELY new to all this stuff so im not sure of which diagram i should follow online.. theres about a million.

really appreciate your help on this.

This looks pretty god for a simple wiring plan.


Also keep in mind that when you run a solid state amp through twice the ohms you lose close to half the power, so a 60 watt amp at 4 ohms will be something like 35 watts at 8 ohms. It is probably not advisable, but you could wire your speakers all parallel and make a 2 ohm cabinet which could end up giving you 100 watts of power, but also might blow something up. What is the wattage of each speaker? If you have four 35 watt speakers they ought to be able to handle 140 watts or so (watt, ohm ratings are never completely accurate)
