Often times we will get a virus or some form of malware that will wreck chaos on our computer, especially alot of us downloading or doing autosurfs will get something strange. As a computer technician, I would like to present tips on how to help with security without making you spend a dime.

Note these tips are primarily for windows users.

1,) Make sure you keep windows up to date. Set up a time when you would be not so busy. To do this, click start > all programs > windows update. Configure the time and date. Windows is always trying to patch the latest issues with their software and a glitch in their software can cause a vulnerability to your system.

2,) You need an anti-virus software. Now personally I use Avast because it helps with many issues and also has a sandbox feature for Zero-day malware. You can try the free 30 days, and after you do and still not wanting to purchase it, then just do a free registration and it will last 365 days. Then you can do it again. 3,) You need flashblock for your browser. Long are the days gone where getting malware by downloading an attachment from an email or a bad program being the ways to getting viruses, or even an infected floppy or usb. You can now get these things from flash ADS! So yes simply browsing the internet can give you a potential infection. You should search for a flashblock program for your browser via google and use it. It would also help if you disable automatic java loadup and load what you want to or add exceptions for it.

4,) USE COMMON SENSE! Yes virus protectors can give false positives, but do a search on them in safe mode if you are not sure. when you relog in, do safe mode with networking by pressing f8 when you enter. Also if you get repeating blue screens, then use f8 and disable automatic start up. Do your research.

5,) Now you will sometimes get popups or a random ad saying "Your computer may have been infected! scan it here to find out!" DO NOT DO THAT! I REPEAT DO NOT DO THAT!!! Instead use your own system to do a scan. Also see about using malware-bytes and ccleaner in addition to your anti virus software. Free versions will suffice.

6,) Now this brings me to also being careful what you download. Alot of freeware tend to have third party software it wants you to download. Now with all things considered it is how they keep it free, but they cannot and are not responsible for any damage the third party software will do. They may give you a choice between custom and express install. Always choose custom and uncheck everything. Other is make sure the agree or decline page you are on is in fact for the intended software and not some random program.
