Brazil has had 5,909 reports of microcephaly since October 22, 2015 until February 27, according to report released by the Ministry of Health on Tuesday (1st). Since the last report, released last week, there were 269 new notifications, 58 cases were confirmed and 96 cases were discarded. In addition, 15 new confirmed cases were related to the virus zika through laboratory tests. Deaths were also reported 139 deaths from microcephaly after childbirth or during pregnancy, of which 31 were confirmed to microcephaly or alteration of the central nervous system, 12 were discharged and 96 are still under investigation. Distribution by regions The reported cases are distributed in 1,143 municipalities in 25 Brazilian states. Amapá and Amazonas are the only states where no microcephaly notification. The Northeast focuses 81% of reported cases. Pernambuco is the state with the highest number of notifications (1,672), followed by Bahia (817), Paraíba (810), Rio Grande do Norte (383), Ceará (352), Rio de Janeiro (261), Alagoas (222) Sergipe (192) and Maranhao (192). There is local transmission zika virus in 22 Brazilian states: Goiás, Minas Gerais, Federal District, Mato Grosso do Sul, Roraima, Amazonas, Pará, Rondônia, Mato Grosso, Tocantins, Maranhao, Piaui, Ceara, Rio Grande do Norte, Paraiba , Pernambuco, Alagoas, Bahia, Espirito Santo, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo and Paraná.
