Mayor K. Sridhar and Municipal Commissioner J. Nivas inaugurated a smart (semi-underground) dumper bin near Loyola College here on Friday.

It is part of Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC)’s eco-friendly management of the huge quantities of garbage generated in the city every day.

Sensors will send SMS alerts to the civic officials concerned once the bins are filled to the extent of 80%, and for cleanliness, there will be tiles around the bins (1.1-ton capacity each) which are made of linear low-density polyethylene.

Mr. Sridhar said a smart bin had already been set up at Ayodhya Nagar and more of them would be coming up soon. Garbage clearance could be done even at nights under solar lighting.
