I didn't have the sftp / customer panel login data yet. Thus I tried to tread carefully. But I failed. I tried setting a higher php memory limit via .htaccess and now it 500s. It's completely dead and so I got no way to click on 'undo'. (it should have been supported per https://guide.hosting.aruba.it/hosti...limit-40m.aspx) Their support is pretty well stonewalled (There's no chat, no phone numbers) behind the customer panel, but I'd really love to reach someone who can help me anyway. Thanks. Check out my SSD guides for Samsung, HGST (Hitachi Global Storage) and Intel! update: i signed up for a hosting service so i could open a support request. I hope they got mercy. Check out my SSD guides for Samsung, HGST (Hitachi Global Storage) and Intel! The ticket hasn't gone anywhere useful over the last 8 hours. Which is a bit much, even considering the lack of credentials. So I'm still looking for a more direct way. I'm gonna call them in a few hours, by now I assume the night shift is not able to handle this. Be it lack of authority, access to someone who could decide something or motivation. Incidentially, I'm keen to hear if you got opinions on professional hosters (local ones in italy preferred). In case they keep up this 'performance'. After all I'm just in because of the low performance. The test site on my 18mbit/s connected server is faster by 10-20 times :/ I would prefer to work with them, but if someone has other options I can look into, for the future, I would love to know. Basically, you can always do a bit with smarter caching and minify'ing, but it might be better to throw money at the problem instead and _then_ optimize. Getting confused on your first post. Ah, sorry I see that part is confusing. The site was an existing one, and since they don't have any public support info I just signed up (and paid ;-) for a wordpress hosting plan of my own so I could get in touch with their support. Then the ticket was in "we're looking into this" for 10 hours. So I called them. I spoke with a very nice support guy who tried to help, but basically he's in the 1st level and I didn't manage to get to speak with anyone who can just open that damn file in vi, hit 'dd' and save, or anything like that. Naturally, for the 1st level they don't got a way to go around me not having the credentials, but with the site being down it's quite frustrating we can't find a way to proceed. Naturally, for the 1st level they don't got a way to go around me not having the credentials, but with the site being down it's quite frustrating we can't find a way to proceed. edit/update: it is more frustrating considering it's a 'wordpress hosting' offering. for a half-managed service I can see if it's not automatically fixed, but if someone raises the hand and says 'hey, it's down by my mistake, by this exact mistake that can be undone like this, could you?'. there's a "fully managed" plan and i'll have them switch to that as soon as someone found the credentials. and if that's also as slow, it's time to leave that provider anyway. Check out my SSD guides for Samsung, HGST (Hitachi Global Storage) and Intel! We reached the guy on vacation who in fact had the credentials. I could ftp in and fix it. Site is back alive. I restored the .htaccess in topmost dir (where wp total cache does its stuff) and then delete the second one directly in the wordpress dir. Effort... well? 5 minutes since I needed to install ftp on a random client. So, for what it's worth, I'll leave some feedback for the next one. I don't remember how to close the post afterwards 1) The normal wordpress admin told me - "yes at aruba you can't play with the .htaccess". 2) I'll recover my nerves and then check. I think the one that 'htaccess editor plugin' I used created was crap. It seems it messed around and maybe it just did a rewrite loop, since they do a mod_rewrite to /wordpress. Not entirely sure, I had tried two, first one gave a php error, the other one left the site dead :-) 3) I think it might be like this: if you edit the lower level (wp site) .htaccess stuff breaks, but the upper level is fine. 4) I can safely tell the ticket never made it to a sysadmin (by the file timestamps) As a large mass hoster they need to rethink how tight the processes need be - if they block availability, they are not serving the customer. It seems that a site being down has little effect on ticket processing & decision paths. That's a process fix to look at. 5) And it's taking quite long again to load now. (20s to 60s on "cold start"). The site theme and slider are both real bad, but if it takes ~1.2s on my test server?? Something is not cool. I didn't sleep much and dimly remember here at WHT we got some protection rules against badmouthing. I can provide the affected site url in direct message. Generally: the 24x7 support asks if you speak english, but the english it is a ruse and it just tells you to use the website. Their support staff has been incredibly patient and nice. My Italian is bad and he tried hard to help me understand their processes. And if someone from their end ever sees this post, I would love to thank the guy with some pizza voucher or such. so, msg me and I'll give you the ticket number. Also, you run some of the largest datacenters in Italy and can't afford an english class for your staff?
