How does those photo website store the user uploaded photos and speed up the website?

Currently, i noticed a lot of photo at the photos website having the directory path at their subdomain. Basically, the photo directory path will looks like this : "https://image.thephotositedomain.com/image/7547385.jpg", may i know does this means they store the user uploaded photo at another hosting location / VPS? 

Or maybe they use the method of Google Drive and CDN to auto upload the photo to googe drive, and put the link in the website? But i am wondering how they can acheive this is this is the way...

Is there any other better way to store so much photos in a photo site and not dragging the website speed? 

I saw a website million of photos, but it is just a small site, so it quite unrealistic that they subsribe any expensive and large store space VPS just to host those user uploaded photos... i am wondering is there any good way to do it while not spending so much of money? Thank you
You can use smush CDN to load it, or you can use imagify for better and faster images
But both of these is still require the original photos files to stay in my own hosting right? Is there any possible to store the photo in other free cloud file storage, and we just generate the url link and post it at our own website and show the photo? Because if require the photo to stay in my own hosting, it will defintely very slow due to the bandwidth of the plan i have subscripted is not that big...
