It has been pointed out that local association executives of sports organizations under the Korea Sports Council have been extorting athlete support funds, but no specific action has been taken.

According to Rep. Kim Seung-soo of the People Power Party, a member of the National Assembly's Culture, Sports and Tourism Committee, on the 15th, the Korea Waterski and Wake Sports Association filed a complaint against Vice President A of its affiliated Jeonnam regional association for embezzlement and breach of trust in March, claiming that he had embezzled athlete support funds and training fees.

Afterwards, in April, he reported to the Jeonnam Provincial Sports Council and requested disciplinary action, including the expulsion of executives, but he said he has not received any response to date.

In relation to this, Rep. Kim's office disclosed a report that Mr. A had embezzled the entire amount of athlete support funds paid directly to athletes affiliated with the Jeonnam Provincial Sports Association at the 2023 Jeonnam National Sports Festival by having them deposited into an account under his spouse's name. Representative Kim's office explained that there were problems with protecting players, such as not paying annual player training support funds until recently.

Rep. Kim said, "There was an incident where a local sports organization extorted athlete support and training fees, and the Korea Sports Council and local sports councils were notified, but no action was taken," adding, "The sports councils' protection of their own members and lenient punishments have gone too far.
