In the lead up to this fight, Sonnen moved his taining camp away from Portland to be with friend and fellow fighter Mark Munoz at Reign Training Center in Lake Forest. Sonnen, who is well know for dishing out a fiar bit of lip before his fights, has been unusually respectful of Rua and has even go as far to compliment the former light heavyweight champ. "I haven't reached my goals, any of them for that matter,'' Sonnen said during an opening workout. "I'm chasing the same things I always was. This is a top contender's fight, we're both ranked in the top 10. It's a hard fight; he's a former world champion, and I've never beat a former UFC champion, so it's a big deal to me, I can tell you that much.'' Sonnen last fought at UFC 159 in April against light heavyweight champion Jon Jones. The paird squared off after coaching opposite in the hit reality TV series The Ultimate Fighter. Jones stopped Sonnen with elbows just before the end of the first round. Shogun too is coming off a loss (to Alexander Gustafsson) and is expected to be a little rusty in his first bout of 2013. Gustafsson beat Shogun by unanimous decision at UFC on Fox: Henderson vs. Diaz back in December last year. In the co-main event on the card, Overeem returns to the cage after losing the opportunity to fight for the UFC heavyweight title. In Feburay this year Antonio "Bigfoot" Silva dropped Overeem in the third round of their title belt eliminator in las Vegas. However a win over Browne will catapult Overeem straight back into the title mix. Browne devastatingly knocked out Gabriel Gonzaga in April on his return from a hamstring injury.
