Manual Migration From cPanel/WHM VPS Planning to move to a new server (either a VPS or dedicated - still weighing options), but I have a potential issue with the migration. ++++++++++++++ If You want to buy cheap web hosting then visit http://Listfreetop.pw and select the cheapest hosting. it can be suitable for all your needs. The problem is that my account is using well over 50% of my VPS disk, so there's no reliable way to create the initial archive without running out of space on my current server. I'd gladly temporarily "upgrade" my account to get more space prior to the move, but I've been told I'm already on the max plan. What are my options for handling the migration? Even though I'm purely looking at well-reviewed, fully managed hosts, none has really given me confidence that they're going to assist. If it's unlikely anyone will help with this kind of migration, then are there some instructions/tips on how I can do it myself? My setup isn't too complex (it's basically just one large website), but I want to make sure all the "cPanel stuff" (database logins, SSL, emails, etc) is seamlessly transferred to the new host. And, obviously, I'm open to any recommendations on VPS or Dedicated hosts who would help me. If you're going for a fully managed host and they can't assist with this, then it's not fully managed. For your disk situation, exclude the big folders from your cPanel backup and then rsync them when the move is over. The cPanel backup will carry over all the settings, email accounts, databases, etc. Cheers UNIXy - Fully Managed Servers and Clusters - Established in 2006 Server Management - Unlimited Servers. So, if I'm following, there should be the option to exclude a particular website's public_html folder (which is using 99% of the disk) from the automated cPanel move. This allows me to transfer the "account." I'd then use rsync to move the public_html folder - and that presumably wouldn't create a local backup (that would cause me to run out of space)? Thanks. Yes but it would create a local backup with the 1% data, which should fit on your disk. You'd then move the cPanel backup, load it up like you would normally do, and then rsync public_html, change ownership/permission, and done. This is actually the best way to do any migration. Its faster, saves diskspace and in our tests way more reliable then using the transfer tool. Thanks. Sorry to be annoying with a follow-up, but I'm assuming a typical "fully managed" host be willing and able to follow this instruction if provided with root access to my existing server... Thanks. Sorry to be annoying with a follow-up, but I'm assuming a typical "fully managed" host be willing and able to follow this instruction if provided with root access to my existing server... Any true managed host should know how to do this, but letting them know this is the way you want to handle things is for the best. Tony Holloway Delivering Custom Hosting Solutions Since January 2004 madRooster.com Fun Name ... Serious Solutions I don't recommend doing a --skiphomedir as that could leave permissions/ownership broken across cPanel servers (user uid won't necessarily be the same). But /scripts/pkgacct --skippublichtml looks really good if 99% of your data is in public_html.
