Server sizing for cpanel hosting
I currently have about 200 cpanel accounts, worth 175GB of data and 250GB of bandwith a month, spread over 3 servers. Since I'm considering moving to a new VPS provider, I am thinking of consolidating into 1 big server instead of 3 smaller ones. However I am not sure if this a good idea. What do you think?

From my opnion, reasons to do it:
- VPS cost would be cheaper
- Only 1 instead of 3 license sets (cloudlinux, cpanel, CXS, management etc)
- More effective use of resources

Reasons not to do it:
- If the server goes down (load, disk space, upgrade, ...), everything is down at once
- In case of a ddos or something I don't have any other server to migrate some important accounts to.
- ...?


I currently have these servers:

Server 1:
4X Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5-2640 v2 @ 2.00GHz
4GB ram
93 GB disk space in use for accounts
84 accounts
+-120 GB bandwith/month
Normal load 0.8-1.5


Server 2:
4X Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5-2640 v2 @ 2.00GHz
8GB ram
72 GB disk space in use for accounts
71 accounts
+-120 GB bandwith/month
Normal load 2-3 (sometimes issues with high cpu usage)

Server 3:
4X Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5-2640 v2 @ 2.00GHz
8GB ram
47 GB disk space in use for accounts
35 accounts
+-30 GB bandwith/month
Normal load 0.2-0.5

All servers are using cloudlinux and have SSD's.

If moving into 1 server, which specs would you recommend? I was thinking 8 vcpu, 16gb RAM, 500GB ssd.

Consolidating is better as the total cost would be less and most importantly your time and effort can be concentrated on the single server

With that number of accounts you could easily move it to one larger server, no problem. I'd suggest more RAM as in the grand scheme of things, it's pretty cheap.

I would definitely recommend that you consolidate. You'd save a good amount of money.

Looking at those specs, I think you'd be ok. You might need a bit more RAM, for heavy-hitting times. You should always plan for growth though.

With that many accounts, I would at least split it into 2 VPS from different data center.

You should consolidate, one server to make, simply your licenses, and then your support and updates are streamlined to one server. 

As per which server you should go with you should do a 32GB RAM this way you can expand incase your business grows, all SSD's just for the disk performance and any cpu from E3 or E5 with 4x should be good. 

I would get the new server setup with all the licenses, hardening and all the bells and whistles and then start migrating customers onto the new server. If you go the Managed Dedicated route, the company can handle all of this for you, but if you have the knowledge I'd do this yourself.
