Hinkley Point C had been backed by former chancellor George Osborne, but when Theresa May took power she postponed the decision over security concerns. France and China are heavily involved, and there were questions about how wise it is to have significant foreign investment in an industry that is so crucial to our infrastructure. But now ministers say they have imposed ‘significant new safeguards’ when it comes to foreign investment in future, and have made a ‘new agreement’ with EDF, the French company which is financing a third of the £18 billion project.
