Recently, Chinese 'surveillance' balloons were destroyed in US airspace. Washington suspects that the balloon, about 200 feet (60 meters) long, was monitoring various US military installations. However, Beijing claims that the balloon was being used for civilian purposes. The balloon accidentally drifted into the United States. Now the country's foreign ministry officials say the balloon is capable of carrying out intelligence gathering operations. It flew over more than 40 countries across five continents.
