There is no average, it normally depends on the experience of the employee or contractor, size and cashflow of the company. For large hosts they could be paying six figures from $120k to $500k+ if the employee is literally driving their innovation and keeping them on top of the industry (Amazon AWS, Dreamhost, GoDaddy, Oracle, IBM, Microsoft, Cisco, Google, etc.).

For mid size companies, they are more than likely paying around six figures for engineers and $30k to $120k and small companies are probably paying on an as needed bases (a few thousand to 30k for contract work, as they normally cannot afford a full time employee).

Do you mean how much do they spend to outsource support? I would imagine the prices are very low. I'm surprised by some of the very poor quality of foreign support. With that said, there are also some companies with foreign support that are fantastic.

I believe that's also depends on the location of the employee, the salaries is quite different in the US and India, for example.
