on-page: unique and useful content (honestly, I don't think that long read is needed in every situation), meta tags, image optimization, a minimal amount of technical issues, internal links, good usability. 
off-page: good backlinks profile

Of course, there is more complex as I wrote it, but I think that should be all done if you want your site ranks high.

You're right but you may see maximum time that long contents rank high in Google than small contents . It's one kind of best ranking factors , I think.
