Bitcoin's and Gold's Past Bubbles Bitcoin has had two major bubbles so far. In the spring of 2011 it went from $1 to $30 in a matter of months. By the end of the year it was worth only $2. It was not until the spring of 2013 that the price surpassed the height of the bubble. At the end of 2013 the price peaked at $1200, At the moment of writing, the spring of 2014, the price is down at $450. Gold can also show some pretty volatile past years. In 2001 an ounce of gold was traded for less than $300. For the next decade it increased in value every year until it peaked at more than $1900 in 2011. Today gold is traded at $1300 per ounce.
