Paro Tourists will always pass Paro District because the only international airport in Bhutan is located here. It is a hilly region and is the area responsible for supplying the best red rice in the country. There are many “dzongs” here in Paro – dzong means fortress or fort or palace in Bhutanese. The architectural design of these dzongs is typical of Bhutanese 17th century structures. The Drukgyel Dzong was highlighted in the National Geographic back in 1914. The Rinpung Dzong was created by the first spiritual leader of Bhutan named Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal. The Ta Dzong is now Paro’s National Museum. It is a circular structure filled with Bhutanese relics.
