SECTION E READING COMPREHENSION This unit is tested in section E (questions 31 – 40 ) Paper 1 of the UPSR examination paper. Two comprehension passages are given : 1. Linear Texts 2. Non – linear texts Linear texts – a. passages b. dialogues c. informal letters d. news report Non – linear texts - a. notices b. advertisements c. posters d. labels e. maps f. tables/graphs g. recipes h. charts I menus j. poems  Each passage is followed by five multiple – choice questions.  The questions asked may test pupils’ critical and creative thinking.  The common question types asked are: a. Identifying the main ideas b. Making inference c. Recalling information/su[supporting details d. Identifying the cause and effect e. Identifying true and false statements f. Giving contextual meaning of words/phrases TIPS ON ANSWERING SECTION E: a. Pupils should read the passage once or twice to get the general idea of what it is about. b. Take note of the main ideas and other important points. c. Study the questions carefully and note the key words. d. Then pupils study the options carefully. e. If pupils are not sure of the answer, cross out the wrong answers first. f. Answer the easier questions first. g. Do not spend too much time on one question.
