One of the four major computer subsystems in the Von Neumann Models
- Performs mathematical/logical operations (+,-,comparison)
- Often grouped with control unit and referred to as the 'processor'
- Made up of registers, interconnections between components, and ALU circuitry (these three components are called the data path)
- Doesn't know when to do things because it can't interact
