Behavioral Patterns of Mental Illness 1.Waxy Flexibility- maintenance of posture or position over time even when it is awkward or uncomfortable. 2.Word Salad-is the combination of jumbled words and phrases that are disconnected or incoherent and make no sense to the listener 3.Flight of Ideas- excessive amount and rate of speech composed of fragmented or unrelated ideas 4.Neologism- are words invented by the client 5.Circumstantiality- Citing excessively minute details which distract from the central theme of a conversation. 6.Blocking- stopping abruptly in the middle of a sentence 7.Hallucination- any of numerous sensations, auditory, visual, or tactile experienced without external stimulus 8.Delusion- fixed, false beliefs with no basis in reality 9.Illusion- A distorted perception of reality; unlike delusions, illusions are generally shared by most people, as in a 3D “hidden picture” puzzle. 10.Tics- sudden, rapid, recurrent, nonrhythmic, stereotyped motor or vocalization 11.Clang Association-are ideas that are related to one another based on sound or anything rather than the meaning 12.Mutism- characterized by persistent failure to speak in social situations where speaking is expected 13.Anergia- lack of energy 14.Anhedonia- losing any sense of pleasure from enjoying the activities formerly enjoyed 15.Irritability- Being susceptible of the client of becoming angry or impatient 16.Verbigeration- the stereotyped repetition of words or phrases that may or may not have meaning to the listener 17.Perseveration- the persistent adherence to a single idea or topic and verbal repetition of a sentence, phrase, or word, even when another person attempts to change the topic 18.Ideas of Reference- client’s inaccurate interpretation that general events are personally directed to him or her such as hearing a speech on the news and believing the message had personal meaning 19.Obsession- recurrent , persistent , intrusive, and unwanted thoughts, images, or impulses that cause marked anxiety and interfere with the interpersonal, social, or occupational function 20.Compulsion- ritualistic or repetitive behaviors or mental acts that a person carries out continuously in an attempt to neutralize anxiety 21.Echolalia- repetition and imitation of what someone else says 22.Echopraxia- imitation of the movements and gestures of the client of someone whon he or she is observing 23.Punning- rare condition is characterized as a set of neurological symptoms resulting in an uncontrollable tendency to tell puns, inappropriate jokes, and/or pointless or irrelevant stories at inappropriate times. 24.Euphoria- an exaggerated buoyancy and sense of bodily health 25.Elation- exalted feeling from either pride or joy 26.Disorientation-Losing appreciation or consciousness on time, place, and persons that the client is dealing with 27.Paranoid- involve the client’s belief that others are planning to harm the client or are spying 28.Depersonalization- a harmless, but often very troubling, mental state characterized by a disruption in one’s self-perception and awareness. 29.Avolition – the decrease in the motivation to initiate and perform self-directed purposeful activities. 30.Alogia- lack of any real meaning or substance in what the client says 31.Religiosity- a comprehensive sociological term used to refer to the involvement, interest or participation in numerous aspects of religious activity, dedication, and belief. 32.Flat Affect- showing no facial expression 33.Blunted Affect- showing little or slow-to-respond facial expression 34.Inappropriate Affect- displaying a facial expression that is incongruent with mood or situation 35.Labile Affect- exhibition of unpredictable and rapid mood swings from depressed and crying to euphoria with no apparent stimuli
