Funnyman Joey de Leon admires comedians who make people laugh using their own materials.

"Mas bilib ako sa mga komedyante na writer kaysa sa hindi. Iyan ang malinaw. Basta nakakasulat. May mga hindi marunong magsulat, maghihintay lang ng script, wala akong bilib diyan," he said at the press conference of his new sitcom, TV5's "One of the Boys."

He added, "Ilan lang talaga ang nakakasulat. Yung iba nakakatawa lang ang mukha, ang pangalan, nakakatawa magdeliver. So yung mga comedians na nakakasulat, diyan ako saludo."

Nonstop writing

Joey with Juan Direction, his co-stars in One of the BoysAmong the many hats he wears -- that of  writer, TV host and actor, Joey's favorite is that of a writer.  After entering the industry via the  ‘70s show "Discorama," where he was a host and a writer, Joey wrote and contributed concepts for his sitcoms, movies and gag shows.

"Hindi ako tumigil sa pagsulat. Mas gusto ko na makilala ako as a writer, hindi artista. Lahat naman nag-aartista, comedy. Lahat ng matinee idols, nag-cocomedy na rin. Wala na ring bago."

Who among the local comedians does he believe in?

"Basta sumusulat sila, okay lang. Pare-pareho lang naman ngayon eh," he replied.

Travel lover

Told that comedian Michael V writes his own materials, Joey said,  "Basta magagaling nakakasama namin."

He gets ideas about  comedy and writing through his travels, where he observes people and everything else.  

"Siguro because I don't drive. I read going to the right, going to the left. Kaya maano ako sa (play of) words eh. Naghahanap ako ng comedy palagi."

Besides  being a writer, Joey wants to be remembered as the one who named the longest-running noontime variety show so far, " Eat Bulaga."

" Kasi siya ang pinakamatindi, pinakamatagal."

Value of punctuality

Joey  credits "Eat Bulaga"  viewers for its longevity.

"Yung mga fans namin, nagka-anak, nagka-apo. Hindi ka basta-basta iiwan. Sabi ko nga kung may bago kaming katapat, sisilip lang iyan pero babalik pa rin iyan sa bahay. Hindi rin kami tumitigil kasi eh."

As for his fellow celebrities, Joey  wants them to value punctuality.

"Pinaka-on time ako. Importante ang time. Ang katwiran ko kasi, tatapusin mo rin iyan, gawin mo na ngayon. Para mas may magawa pa kayo ng marami. May mga artista na tamad, lalo na nung nauso yung cellphone. May iba na after one take, ligawan.  Ang iniisip namin, tapusin na natin nang makagawa pa tayo ng gimik."
