The Madhya Pradesh government has directed its Economic Offences Wing  (EOW) to register a case under the Prevention of Corruption Act against those caught on camera by India Today, trying to fix and strike deals for sale of onion that is being procured at a minimum support price of Rs 8 per Kg by the food and civil supplies corporation.
India Today on Wednesday had exposed officials of the food and civil supplies corporation who were caught on camera demanding money for fixing deals for the sale of freshly procured onion.
Among those who were caught on camera was the general manager of the corporation SK Soni who was suspended after the expose.
SK Mishra Principal Secretary to Chief Minister while confirming action against those caught on camera in the expose told to India Today, "since those exposed by the India Today story are talking about fixing deals at various locations across the state we have directed the EOW to register a case and get to the bottom of the matter. Those indulging in corruption won't be spared."
The opposition Congress party, however, has charged the government of trying to save the political masters while acting against officials.
"It is really unfortunate. While on the one hand the government is trying to claim that it wants to help farmers in reality corrupt officials and their political masters are striking deals. There is a nexus between corrupt officials politicians and traders," leader of opposition in the state Vidhan Sabha Rahul Singh while talking to India Today said.
