I'm sure hosting companies have good techs but they'll be experts on the server side of things and not necessarily the website coding. When I get 500 errors on my sites I usually just disable the htaccess file which usually brings the site back up then I troubleshoot from there, and in the end I rarely make any changes to the actual hosting settings.
