As Webb dismisses off-the-record warnings, on-the-ground rebels and endless government stonewalling, Messenger flits between the charge of sticking it to the man while sympathising with its subject to nearly a fault. I left the theater saddened and disheartened, but at the same time hopeful for those rare individuals who are fearless enough to stand up for what they believe when their support system has been paralyzed. What makes this so watchable is Jeremy Renner's portrayal of newspaper reporter Gary Webb.
My Thoughts: When I first saw the trailer I thought this would be a good movie. Kill the Messenger is based on a book I didn't read. The script is based on the book, of the same name, by Nick Schou and the novel 'Dark Allaince' by Webb himself. They did this in order to sell it in ghettos, primarily in California, in order to raise money for supporting Contra rebels in Nicaragua. Having said all that, if you take the time to reach beyond this controversial surface story and embrace Sean Bobbitt's intimate framing and selective foci, you'll discover Gary; a doggedly passionate and humanly flawed individual whose good intention to report a story 'just too true to tell' results in an overwhelmingly biased and unfair challenge on his credibility and integrity with devastating consequences. But that point didn't get much of the flow, because again the whole message of this film is the danger of getting into this situation. It was well worth it. And Blandon himself later specifically denied that Bermudez asked him to raise money through drug smuggling. As Webb tries to hold on to his family, despite warnings they are vulnerable, we go deeper with him into the frustrations of cowardly colleagues and questionable contacts, who stand ready to compromise the integrity of his series called Dark Alliance. He's also a communicative parent who's willing to discuss difficult issues with both his oldest son and his wife. The editor he works for, Anna, is principled, but doesn't always have his back professionally. Scenes are more sinister or seamy than violent at one point, Gary visits a government office and subtly but clearly receives a verbal threat against his familyexcept for one moment when Gary and another man kneel with their hands over their heads, threatened by gun-toting strangers. In a fit of despair, fear, and frustration, a man punches a car window, wounding his hand. He also fires a gun one night to scare off what he thinks is an intruder. It's an explosive discovery, one with significant criminal, political, and sociological implications. But as soon as Webb reaps the plaudits, the attacks begin. And not just from those he's writing about, some of whom are as sinister as they come. But from within his industry, too: Did he report his articles correctly. Why doesn't he have more sources on record. How did a reporter in a small bureau nab one of the biggest stories of the decade. His marriage to his wifestill delicate after a struggle, begins to unravel, and his editors and start backing away, leaving Webb alone to weather the pressure and the isolation. When he seethes, his entire person seethes. When he glowers, all of him does. And when he's in pain, as in one scene involving a car, the entire audience can feel his pain fly off the cinematic frame.
