This time I'm not bringing along any of my nieces or friends' kids, so I decide to skip the busy family-friendly beach at Clay County Park Campground and instead go to the "Circle," a less used, unmarked boat access point. You'll find it a little distance down Hinton Center Road from Highway 64, marked by two enormous yellow gates. Stay with them till the finish. However, there is enough of open, soft grass to make up for the lack of a sandy beach. I stake my claim on a picnic table, set up my gear and food, and swim for a couple of hours. After a swim and some lunch, I like to walk the three miles around the top of Chatuge Dam, taking in the scenic views of the lake. Runners, kids on bikes, and seniors walking their dogs are all examples of the folks who wave and smile at me as I pass. A few of ladies I overhear are planning on visiting the tiki bar later that night. Sand Bar & Grille in Hiawassee, Georgia, across the lake, is fondly referred to as the "tiki bar" due to its vibrant, tropical atmosphere. There are large Adirondack chairs, fire pits, cornhole, and a view of the lake at this bar and "beach" decorated in teal. The live band is playing, and the drinks are free. When you first arrive, get beverages immediately before the place becomes too crowded. As soon as I get in the car, I go back to the quaint downtown square of Hayesville, where I dine at The Copper Door for a four-course prix-fixe meal. Chef Dennis Barber creates a somewhat different menu each night, but it always incorporates classic French dishes with Louisianan flair. The menu for tonight includes poached pears with maize gateau, lamb, fresh fennel salad, and grilled peaches and halloumi. Before turning in for the night, I like to cross the street to Nocturnal Brewing Company for a nightcap and a stroll around the quaint plaza: https://supermariobros.io
