Is it possible to setup rDNS on Shared Hosting?


Hello,
I want to setup rDNS on one of my Websites. It's on a Shared Hosting. Is it possible to setup rDNS on Shared Web Hosting? If yes, how can I setup that?

If you do not have a dedicated IP it is not possible.
If you do - contact your host. They will be able to do it for you.


It's not possible if a hosting service is using shared IP address as it already has a rDNS setup with the server hostname. 
However, if a hosting service is using dedicated IP address then you can ask the host to setup it.

rDNS setup for shared hosting is not possible. As the main server is shared among many users & already it is setup with server hostname.
 
 


It is possible, but as previously mentioned, you can only do it if you are the only person using that IP. (Dedicated IP).
Your host should be able to set that up for you on request. Further work may be necessary, mail server "from" communications will also have to be changed for that IP to the new rDNS name.
That's is a contributory reason why the hosts don't usually allow customers to make the change themselves, as well at this can be abused.
For instance, we won't change your rDNS name unless the name you want it changed to resolves to that address and we switch it back once it fails to resolve to that address.


Anything is possible. So yes - it's possible - to answer your question plainly.
Will your provider do it for you? That's a good question that nobody but your provider can answer.

You need to have dedicated IP to set-up RDNS.
Shared hosting will not have dedicated IP,so you cannot set-up RDNS for shared hosting.

Shared Hosting and Dedicated IPs are not mutually exclusive. You can share a server but still have a dedicated IP.

Yes but the rDNS will relay to the server as rDNS is set up using the IP address and server hostname, but if a server has say 3 accounts using dedicated IPs and all want rDNS set up then these can conflict with each other as they are on the same server.

RDNS can only be set up if you possess a dedicated IP, hence with VPS and dedicated servers it is possible to set up rdns. With shared hosting it is not possible because shared hosting clients share the IP.

Yes, this is the right choice, if you need your own PTR records and rDNS.
