  1. ere there. They had heard Peter’s cowardly denial of
  2. Jesus, with cursing and swearing, as he was accused of being
  3. one of his disciples. They thought to intimidate Peter; but he
  4. was not converted. An opportunity was here given Peter to
  5. exalt Jesus. He once denied him; but he could now remove
  6. the stain of that hasty, cowardly denial, and honor the name
  7. he had denied. No cowardly fears reigned in the breast of
  8. Peter then; but with holy boldness, and in the power of the
  9. Holy Spirit, he fearlessly declared unto them that by the name
  10. of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom ye crucified, whom God
  11. raised from the dead, even by him doth this man stand here
  12. before you whole. This is the stone which was set at naught of
  13. you builders, which has become the head stone of the corner.
  14. Neither is there salvation in any other; for there is none other
  15. name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be
  16. saved.
  17. The people were astonished at the boldness of Peter and
  18. John. They took knowledge of them that they had been with
  19. Jesus; for their noble, fearless conduct compared well with the
  20. appearance of Jesus when he was persecuted by his murderers.
  21. Jesus, by one look of pity and sorrow, reproved Peter after he
  22. had denied him, and now as be boldly acknowledged his Lord,
  23. Peter was approved and blessed. As a token of
  24. 82
  25. the approbation of Jesus, he was filled with the Holy Spirit.
  26. The chief priests dared not manifest the hate they felt
  27. towards the disciples. They commanded them to go aside out
  28. of the council, and they conferred among themselves, saying,
  29. What shall we do to these men? for that indeed a notable
  30. miracle hath been done by them is manifest to all them that
  31. dwell in Jerusalem, and we cannot deny it. They were afraid
  32. to have this good work spread. If it should spread, their power
  33. would be lost, and they would be looked upon as the murderers
  34. of Jesus. All that they dared to do was to threaten them, and
  35. command them to speak no more in the name of Jesus lest they
  36. die. But Peter declared boldly that they could but speak the
  37. things which they had seen and heard.
  38. By the power of Jesus the disciples continued to heal every
  39. one of the afflicted and the sick which were brought to them.
  40. The high priests and elders, and those particularly engaged with
  41. them, were alarmed. Hundreds were enlisting daily under the
  42. banner of a crucified, risen and ascended Saviour. They shut
  43. the apostles up in prison, and hoped that the excitement would
  44. subside. Satan triumphed, and the evil angels exulted; but the
  45. angels of God were sent and opened the prison doors, and,
  46. contrary to the command of the high priest and elders, bade
  47. them go into the
  48. 83
  49. temple, and speak all the words of this life. The council
  50. assembled and sent for their prisoners. The officers unclosed
  51. the prison doors; but the prisoners whom they sought were not
  52. there. They returned to the priests and elders, and said to them,
  53. The prison truly found we shut with all safety, and the keepers
  54. standing without before the doors; but when we had opened we
  55. found no man within. Then came one and told them, saying,
  56. Behold the men whom ye put in prison are standing in the
  57. temple, and teaching the people. Then went the captain with
  58. the officers, and brought them without violence; for they feared
  59. the people lest they should have been stoned. And when they
  60. had brought them, they set them before the council; and the
  61. high priest asked them, Did not we straitly command you, that
  62. ye should not teach in this name? and, behold, ye have filled
  63. Jerusalem with your doctrine, and intend to bring this man’s
  64. blood upon us.
  65. They were hypocrites, and loved the praise of men more
  66. than they loved God. Their hearts were hardened, and the
  67. most mighty acts wrought by the apostles only enraged them.
  68. They knew that if the disciples preached Jesus, his crucifixion,
  69. resurrection and ascension, it would fasten guilt upon them,
  70. and proclaim them his murderers. They were not as willing to
  71. receive the blood of Jesus as when they vehemently cried. His
  72. blood be on us, and on our children.
  73. 84
  74. The apostles boldly declared that they ought to obey God
  75. rather than man. Said Peter, The God of our fathers raised up
  76. Jesus, whom ye slew and hanged on a tree. Him hath God
  77. exalted with his right hand to be a Prince and a Saviour, for
  78. to give repentance to Israel, and forgiveness of sins. And we
  79. are his witnesses of these things, and so is also the Holy Spirit
  80. whom God hath given to them that obey him. Then were those
  81. murderers enraged. They wished to imbrue their hands in blood
  82. again by slaying the apostles. They were planning how to do
  83. this, when an angel from God was sent to Gamaliel to move
  84. upon his heart to counsel the chief priest and rulers. Said
  85. Gamaliel, Refrain from these men, and let them alone; for if

  87. this counsel or this work be of men, it will come to naught; but
  88. if it be of God ye cannot overthrow it; lest haply ye be found
  89. even to fight against God. The evil angels were moving upon
  90. the priests and elders to put the apostles to death; but God sent
  91. his angel to prevent it, by raising up a voice in favor of the
  92. disciples in their own ranks.
  93. The work of the apostles was not finished. They were to be
  94. brought before kings, to witness to the name of Jesus, and to
  95. testify to the things which they had seen and heard. But before
  96. these chief priests and elders let th
