ELIZABETH JACKSON: Police have confirmed that nine people are dead and there are multiple casualties, following a mass shooting at a shopping mall.
It’s thought that there are up to three gunmen still on the run. Witnesses have told police they saw at least three men with guns.
The city is in lockdown. People are being urged to avoid public places. Public transport has been suspended and Munich’s central railway station has been evacuated.
German authorities say they suspect it is a terror incident, but so far they have no indication that there are Islamist connections to these attacks.

STEVE CANNANE: On Friday afternoon, as Bavarians began winding down for their weekend, shots rung out at the Olympia shopping mall in Munich.

Victor Wood was leaving the shopping centre:
VICTOR WOOD: We didn’t actually see who was doing any shooting. There was a building in between us. But when I got out of the U-Bahn a few minutes later there were lots of police cars and so on going by. That’s when we realised what has happened.
