  1. us more useful in God’s service. Then like threads of gold, holiness
  2. will run through our lives, and the angels, beholding our consecration,
  3. will repeat the promise, “I will make a man more precious than
  4. fine gold; even a man than the golden wedge of Ophir.” All heaven
  5. rejoices when weak, faulty human beings give themselves to Jesus,
  6. to live His life.—The Review and Herald, October 1, 1908.
  7. Joy Through Repentance
  8. The conditions of salvation for man are ordained of God. Selfabasement
  9. and cross-bearing are the provisions made for the repenting
  10. sinner to find comfort and peace. The thought that Jesus
  11. submitted to humiliation and sacrifice that man will never be called
  12. to endure, should hush every murmuring voice. The sweetest joy
  13. comes to man through his sincere repentance toward God because of
  14. the transgression of His law, and faith in Jesus Christ as the sinner’s
  15. Redeemer and Advocate.—The Signs of the Times, March 4, 1880. [109]
  16. Chapter 29—The Victorious Life
  17. Peace comes with dependence on divine power. As fast as the
  18. soul resolves to act in accordance with the light given, the Holy Spirit
  19. gives more light and strength. The grace of the Spirit is supplied to
  20. co-operate with the soul’s resolve, but it is not a substitute for the
  21. individual exercise of faith. Success in the Christian life depends
  22. upon the appropriation of the light that God has given. It is not an
  23. abundance of light and evidence that makes the soul free in Christ;
  24. it is the rising of the powers and the will and the energies of the soul
  25. to cry out sincerely, “Lord, I believe; help Thou mine unbelief.”
  26. I rejoice in the bright prospects of the future, and so may you.
  27. Be cheerful, and praise the Lord for His lovingkindness. That which
  28. you cannot understand, commit to Him. He loves you, and pities
  29. your every weakness. He “hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings
  30. in heavenly places in Christ.” It would not satisfy the heart of the
  31. infinite One to give those who love His Son a lesser blessing than
  32. He gives His Son.
  33. Satan seeks to draw our minds away from the mighty Helper, to
  34. lead us to ponder over our degeneration of soul. But though Jesus
  35. sees the guilt of the past, He speaks pardon; and we should not
  36. dishonor Him by doubting His love. The feeling of guiltiness must
  37. be laid at the foot of the cross, or it will poison the springs of life.
  38. [110] When Satan thrusts his threatenings upon you, turn from them, and
  39. comfort your soul with the promises of God. The cloud may be
  40. dark in itself, but when filled with the light of heaven, it turns to the
  41. brightness of gold; for the glory of God rests upon it.
  42. God’s children are not to be subject to feelings and emotions.
  43. When they fluctuate between hope and fear, the heart of Christ is
  44. hurt; for He has given them unmistakable evidence of His love....
  45. He wants them to do the work He has given them; then their hearts
  46. will become in His hands as sacred harps, every chord of which will
  47. send forth praise and thanksgiving to the One sent by God to take
  48. away the sins of the world.
  49. 102
  50. Victorious Life 103
  51. Christ’s love for His children is as tender as it is strong. And
  52. it is stronger than death; for He died to purchase our salvation,
  53. and to make us one with Him, mystically and eternally one. So
  54. strong is His love that it controls all His powers, and employs the
  55. vast resources of heaven in doing His people good. It is without
  56. variableness or shadow of turning,—the same yesterday, today, and
  57. forever. Although sin has existed for ages, trying to counteract this
  58. love and obstruct its flowing earthward, it still flows in rich currents
  59. to those for whom Christ died.—Testimonies to Ministers, 518-519.
  60. The Dominating Influence
  61. Remember that in your life, religion is not merely one influence
  62. among others; it is to be an influence dominating all others.—Counsels
  63. to Parents, Teachers, and Students, 489. [111]
  64. Chapter 30—Living Faith
  65. Many who are sincerely seeking for holiness of heart and purity
  66. of life seem perplexed and discouraged. They are constantly looking
  67. to themselves, and lamenting their lack of faith; and because
  68. they have no faith, they feel that they cannot claim the blessing of
  69. God. These persons mistake feeling for faith. They look above the
  70. simplicity of true faith, and thus bring great darkness upon their
  71. souls. They should turn the mind from self, to dwell upon the mercy
  72. and goodness of God and to recount His promises, and then simply
  73. believe that He will fulfill His word.
  74. We are not to trust in our faith, but in the promises of God. When
  75. we repent of our past transgressions of His law, and resolve to render
  76. obedience in the future, we should believe that God for Christ’s sake
  77. accepts us, and forgives our sins.
  78. Darkness and discouragement will sometimes come upon the
  79. soul, and threaten to overwhelm us; but we should not cast away
  80. our confidence. We must keep the eye fixed on Jesus, feeling or no
  81. feeling. We should seek to faithfully perform every known duty, and
  82. then calmly rest in the promises of God.
  83. Do Not Depend on Feeling
  84. At times a deep sense of our unworthiness will send a thrill of
  85. terror through the soul; but this is no evidence that God has changed
  86. [112] toward us, or we toward God. No effort should be made to rein the
  87. mind up to a certain intensity of emotion. We may not feel today the
  88. peace and joy which we felt yesterday; but we should by faith grasp
  89. the hand of Christ, and trust Him as fully in the darkness as in the
  90. light.
  91. Satan may whisper, “You are too great a sinner for Christ to save.”
  92. While you acknowledge that you are indeed sinful and unworthy,
  93. you may meet the tempter with the cry, “By virtue of the atonement,
  94. I claim Christ as my Saviour. I trust not to my own merits, but to the
  95. 104
  96. Living Faith 105
  97. precious blood of Jesus, which cleanses me. This moment I hang my
  98. helpless soul on Christ.” The Christian life must be a life of constant,
  99. living faith. An unyielding trust, a firm reliance upon Christ, will
  100. bring peace and assurance to the soul.
  101. Be Not Discouraged
  102. Be not discouraged because your heart seems hard. Every obstacle,
  103. every internal foe, only increases your need of Christ. He came
  104. to take away the heart of stone, and give you a heart of flesh. Look
  105. to Him for special grace to overcome your peculiar faults. When
  106. assailed by temptation, steadfastly resist the evil promptings; say to
  107. your soul, “How can I dishonor my Redeemer? I have given myself
  108. to Christ; I cannot do the works of Satan.” Cry to the dear Saviour
  109. for help to sacrifice every idol, and to put away every darling sin.
  110. Let the eye of faith see Jesus standing before the Father’s throne,
  111. presenting His wounded hands as He pleads for you. Believe that
  112. strength comes to you through your precious Saviour.
