One day a mining prospector named Edward Doheny was walking down the streets of Los Angeles. Being inquisitive and observant he gazed curiously at a passing wagon carrying a load of sticky tar. Doheny called out to the driver and asked where he found the tar. The driver then told him that it had been scooped up from the nearby Brea tar pits.
