Great leadership—much like any academic subject—can be closely studied, devoutly practiced, and refined over time. Exceptional leadership is less tangible. It’s woven into the very essence of a select few. The gulf between great and exceptional leadership is often elusive, but when the world loses someone like Arne Sorenson it becomes particularly pronounced.
Arne offered unwavering courage in the face of every challenge, grace in the midst of turbulence, and compassion during the most trying circumstances. Wherever he went, a sense of true belonging followed. To be in the presence of Arne was to love him, and feel his love in return. So much of my own journey as a leader has been shaped and supported by Arne—particularly the final six years of my tenure as CEO of PepsiCo.
My thoughts are with Arne’s family and all his colleagues at Marriott International. The only thing that rivals the size of the void that Arne leaves behind is the example that he set—for leadership, for parenthood and partnership, for friendship. Arne—your legacy is a blueprint. Thank you.
