  1. is our work? The same as that given to John the Baptist, of
  2. whom we read: “In those days came John the Baptist, preaching in
  3. the wilderness of Judea, and saying, Repent ye: for the kingdom of
  4. heaven is at hand. For this is he that was spoken of by the prophet
  5. Esaias, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare
  6. ye the way of the Lord, make His paths straight.” Matthew 3:1-3.
  7. All who are truly engaged in the work of the Lord for these last
  8. days will have a decided message to bear. Read the first few verses
  9. of the fortieth chapter of Isaiah:
  10. “The voice of him that crieth in the wilderness, Prepare ye the
  11. way of the Lord, make straight in the desert a highway for our God.
  12. Every valley shall be exalted, and every mountain and hill shall be
  13. made low: and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough
  14. places plain: and the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all
  15. flesh shall see it together: for the mouth of the Lord hath spoken it.”
  16. Isaiah 40:3-5.
  17. “The voice said, Cry. And he said, What shall I cry? All flesh
  18. is grass, and all the goodliness thereof is as the flower of the field:
  19. the grass withereth, the flower fadeth: because the Spirit of the Lord
  20. bloweth upon it: surely the people is grass. The grass withereth, the
  21. flower fadeth: but the word of our God shall stand forever.” Verses
  22. [10] 6-8.
  23. This chapter is filled with instruction appropriate for us at this
  24. time. The word of the Lord to us is: “Repent ye; prepare the way
  25. for a revival of My work.”
  26. The removal to Washington of work hitherto carried on in Battle
  27. Creek is a step in the right direction. We are to continue to press into
  28. the regions beyond, where the people are in spiritual darkness. Every
  29. valley shall be exalted, and every mountain and hill shall be made
  30. low: and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough places
  31. plain.” Verse 4. Every obstacle to the redemption of God’s people
  32. is to be removed by the opening of His word and the presentation

  34. Our Work 15
  35. of a plain “Thus saith the Lord.” The true light is to shine forth; for
  36. darkness covers the earth, and gross darkness the people. The truth
  37. of the living God is to appear in contrast with error. Proclaim the
  38. glad tidings. We have a Saviour who has given His life that those
  39. who believe in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
  40. Obstacles to the advancement of the work of God will appear;
  41. but fear not. To the omnipotence of the King of Kings, our covenantkeeping
  42. God unites the gentleness and care of a tender shepherd.
  43. Nothing can stand in His way. His power is absolute, and it is the
  44. pledge of the sure fulfillment of His promises to His people. He can
  45. remove all obstructions to the advancement of His work. He has
  46. means for the removal of every difficulty, that those who serve Him
  47. and respect the means He employs may be delivered. His goodness
  48. and love are infinite, and His covenant is unalterable.
  49. The plans of the enemies of His work may seem to be firm and
  50. well established, but He can overthrow the strongest of these plans,
  51. and in His own time and way He will do this, when He sees that

  53. our faith has been sufficiently tested and that we are drawing near to
  54. Him and making Him our counselor.
  55. In the darkest days, when appearances seem so forbidding, fear
  56. not. Have faith in God. He is working out His will, doing all things [11]
