  37. 7 tips to prolong the life of your car battery
  38. There are a number of things you can do to care for your car battery and prolong its performance, saving yourself time and money. Our car battery care tips below will reduce your risk of experiencing a flat battery and maximise the potential life of your battery. Car batteries do have a limited life - it is reassuring to know, however, that RAC batteries are guaranteed for the period of the warranty (up to three-year nationwide warranty).
  39. 1. Drive your vehicle regularly
  40. Leaving your vehicle stationary for an extended period affects your battery’s charge. To maintain the required level of charge in your battery make sure you regularly drive your vehicle.
  41. 2. Have your engine serviced regularly
  42. Poor engine condition can overload the battery and reduce its life. RAC Members receive 10% off labour charges on vehicle servicing at RAC Auto Services, and will also check your battery at the same time. Call RAC Auto Services on 1300 797 078 to book your service.
  43. 3. Check the battery charging rate
  44. Have the charging rate checked at every major service. Both under and over-charging will reduce car battery life and void the warranty.
  45. 4. Avoid draining
  46. Avoid leaving vehicle accessories on regularly as this will discharge the battery which will then require a recharge. Constant recharging may shorten the life of your battery.
  47. 5. Keep the car battery case clean
  48. Dirt and dampness can damage your battery case and may cause your battery to lose change. Ensure the case and terminals are checked and cleaned during every major service.
  49. 6. Secure your car battery
  50. Check that your battery is secure at all times, as vibrations can damage the battery plates. Inspect battery terminals regularly; loose connections can cause breakdowns.
  51. 7. Don't jump start a flat car battery
  52. Don’t attempt a jump-start as it can damage the electronics in many modern cars. If you have a flat battery, call RAC Battery Services on 13 11 11, call RAC Roadside Assistance if you are a member, or just visit any RAC Auto Services branch.
