  1. The key to finding the right job is not to settle for the
  2. first thing that comes up. People have a habit of
  3. panicking around Easter if they haven't got a job. Don't.
  4. There will always be someone who gets a job really early
  5. on in the year - I think one of our students got a job in
  6. November - but it's more important to get the right job
  7. than it is to get just any job.
  8. The best place to look for jobs is in The Times
  9. Educational Supplement) which is published each
  10. Thursday. It also has a website that is updated regularly,
  11. www.tes.co.uk. All major papers have an education
  12. section with jobs advertised - the Guardian is
  13. particularly good and has a companion website,
  14. www.jobs.guardian.co.uk.This makes it quick and easy
  15. to see what's on offer.
  16. When looking for a job the first thing most people
  17. focus on is the location. Pick a city or town that you
  18. want to live in, then get a map and circle how far you are
  19. willing to travel. This will give you a number of places
  20. within your travelling distance.
  21. After finding a school where you want to live, look at
  22. what sort of school it is - is it inner city or rural? These
  23. schools are very different. Inner-city schools will usually be
  24. multicultural and have a large catchment area, rural schools
  25. are more often than not predominantly white British.
  26. Next, check out the school:
  27. o Look at its website.
  28. o What are the grades like?
  29. o Look at its Ofsted report by checking the government
  30. website, www.ofsted.gov.uk
  31. Check out the catchment area:
  32. o Go to the school when the final bell rings. What are
  33. the pupils like coming out - loud and hyperactive,
  34. or friendly?
  35. o Watch them around the streets. Go and buy a packet
  36. of crisps at the local shop they go into - what are they
  37. like with members of the public?
  38. o Even ask the shopkeeper what the children are like.
