It was a dark and stormy night. The wind howled through the trees, and lightning illuminated the sky in brief, flickering bursts. Mary huddled under her blankets, trying to ignore the sounds of the storm raging outside.
Suddenly, she heard a loud knock at the door. She sat up in bed, heart racing, as the knock came again, more insistent this time. Who could be out in this terrible weather, and why were they knocking on her door?
She hesitated for a moment, then swung her legs out of bed and made her way to the door, flipping on the porch light as she went. When she opened the door, she was greeted by a figure shrouded in a long, dark coat; a hood pulled low over their face.
"Can I help you?" Mary asked, trying to keep the fear out of her voice.
The figure didn't respond but reached into its coat and produced a small, intricately carved box. Mary's heart skipped a beat as the figure held the box.
"What is this?" she asked, taking the box gingerly. It was heavy, and as she turned it over in her hands, she saw it covered in strange symbols and markings.
"Open it," the figure said, their voice a low, guttural growl.
Mary's hands were shaking as she lifted the lid of the box. Inside, there was a single glowing crystal. It pulsed with an otherworldly light, and Mary felt a sudden, overwhelming sense of dread wash over her.
"What is this?" she asked again, her voice barely above a whisper.
"It's a gift," the figure replied. "A gift from beyond the veil. And with it, you will have the power to see the truth."

With shaking hands, she gathered up the crystal and wrapped it in a cloth, then made her way to the edge of town. She found a deep, dark ravine and, with a sense of finality, tossed the crystal down into its depths.
As she walked away, she couldn't shake the feeling that she was being watched, and she knew that the horrors of the beyond were not done with her yet. But she also knew that, as long as she stayed away from the crystal and its dark, corrupting influence, she might just have a chance at survival.
