What sections/topics should be on the main website page?
We are working on design for a mobile SPA web site main/home landing page for service oriented local business. The graphic/html designers keep asking about what sections/topics we want to have on the page. The structure of the site is relatively simple, - main page with list of sub directories service types/department pages. We want to keep the main page lite and minimalistic and understand it is very business specific, but had compiled a list of things we had came up with. What do you consider is essentially necessary on the main page?

I don't know what a SPA web site is so I doubt I can help.
However I would say that the business, and its intended communications with its visitors should drive the contents on the homepage.
Personally I like sites with high useability.
I like that if someone is dropped in a deep contents page and then asked to find it again from the homepage, they can find it again.
SPA Single Page Application is a website where there is one page and all the content is then added (and removed) using AJAX.
Contact Us section, especially if you have any kind of B&M presence. Put all the details in there, including social details.
How about a People section? People deal with people.
Too many web businesses have no humans on there, and if they do it'll be stock photo faces.
engine, - I see what you mean, totally agree with your suggestion. But you refer to sites directory, page and we are talking regarding one single main page
I'm with you rivsrush, it's one scrolling page which will end up with jump to sections. I'd have the jump to for the suggestions I mentioned.

What parts, you think, should go above fold and what is go down?
Got ask ... does using an SPA format not give pause to consider SEO and ranking? Will there be a bot version of the site to make sure that happens? What about analytics? These are not "page views"... since the page "lasts forever" the potential for memory leaks in the browser rise, degrading UX ... a js load is not the same as a page load, hence browser functions are broken, causing confusion to users ... users with js disabled get a blank page ... because of code bloat (to fix the issues) is probably a slower page ... most SPA pages are accessibility deficient...

These questions have always bothered me, so I've never tried to build an SPA.
That said, I have visited a few sites where SPA has been beautifully done, so there probably is a place in the web universe for that kind of coding!

we understand all spa challenges, and it sort of experiment, the customer request was web site look and feel like native app though. Another technic we had try is sort of hybridizing, means spa only dynamic part but static content pages like faq, policies.... is classic performance optimized content. Site structure is still in pre alpha shape, but CDN with http2 do magic.:)

Another option, make your home page go into detail about what the site is covering and place links to your best pages on that index page. Add links to the rest of the pages in an html sitemap and link that from the side or bottom of every page. No list of categories.
Reason, if you sitewide a bunch of categories these become extremely important in your internal link structure but will rank notoriously poorly. You will need heavy internal linking between articles to drain how much value is pooled in category pages back onto the articles.
