In another first, Round 1 features a double-header at the new 60,000 seat Perth Stadium, with South Sydney and Canterbury set to give the stadium its opening blessing followed by the Storm and Warriors. The Dragons and Broncos kick off the season on Thursday 8th March at OUW Juibilee Oval. There will be a further three double headers across the first 10 rounds in a bid by the NRL to boost crowd numbers following a disappointing year with numbers through the turnstiles. The NRL will also give back to country rugby league, taking games to the bush in seven country towns including Mudgee, Cairns, Gosford, Tamworth, Gladstone and Bathurst. The grand final rematch launches early in the season in Round 3 at AAMI park as reigning premiers Melbourne host the Cowboys with the return of Johnathan Thurston. Both teams will face off in a pre-season milestone game to commemorate the careers of Cameron Smith and Johnathan Thurston. The season has been cut from 26 to 25 rounds due to the change in State of Origin format with a standalone fixture set to take place on a Sunday instead of Wednesday. Channel Nine will broadcast the Thursday night, Friday night and Sunday afternoon fixture live and free-to-air,. Fox Sports will feature every NRL fixture across the 25 rounds.
