[ANDROID]
@1 - Helpful Links
- XDA Developers
http://www.xda-developers.com/
Provides instructions on rooting your device as well as a ton of customization forums and downloads.
- Scrotter
https://github.com/Yttrium-tYcLief/Scrotter
Used for taking those screenshots with the phone border. You can upload your own image or it can take screenshots via ADB USB or Wireless.
@2 Rooting
Rooting is not essential to ricing but it provides a lot more options to ricing your device, such as:
- Custom coloring of the nav bar and status bar
- Hiding of the nav bar and status bar
- Changing the size of the UI
- Custom LED coloring for notifications
- Probably more that I forgot to list
XDA Developers has a board for every individual device and instructions on how to achieve root.
@2a - ROMs
ROMs are custom software that you flash to your phone after rooting. Each ROM has it's own advantages and disadvantages, so be sure to research your ROM before flashing.

- CyanogenMod

A good entry-level ROM for those new to rooting. Updates often on the latest Android version with some customization features.
- Paranoid Android

Best for customizing the size and colors of the UI. Also has the feature to use an alternative to the nav bar called Pie.
- AOKP
http://aokp.co/
Like CyanogenMod with more features.
- MIUI
http://en.miui.com/
A sweet mixture of iOS and Android.
UP AND COMING
- Firefox OS
http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/partners/
