  1. Whether you are on your way to work, or in a club; whether you are at the foothills of Himalayas, or boarding a local train in Mumbai; the phenomenon of clicking selfies has captivated everyone around you including yourself.
  2. With the rise in the popularity of different social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat, the addiction among teenagers or even adults, to constantly document their lives in these platforms through selfies is also increasing. And while doing this, people get more concerned with capturing the perfect selfie rather than living the moment. Moreover, to get a perfect selfie, people, constantly put their lives at risk.

According to a recent study, “Me, Myself and my Killfie: Characterizing and Preventing Selfie Deaths”, conducted by Carnegie Mellon University in Pennsylvania, US, and Indraprastha Institute of Information Delhi, 60 per cent of all selfie related deaths throughout the world between March 2014 and September 2016, have occurred in India.

Only yesterday, two sisters from Laskar in Haridwar had a near death experience after falling from a height of 75 feet from the Radha Rani temple situated at Barsana in Mathura, while trying to take a selfie with an idol of Lord Krishna. They had been admitted to a hospital and are said to be in a critical condition.

  7. It is baffling how people are willing to take so much risk, just to take a selfie. In another recent incident, 30-year-old Abhilash, a resident of Girnagar, broke into the Bannerghatta Biological Part (BBP) safari park on July 25, desperate to take a selfie with an elephant. However, an elephant caught him with his trunk and trampled him to death.
  8. In another shocking incident that had occurred last month in Vena Lake, just outside Nagpur, a boat, that had accommodated 11 youths (including 3 boatment) toppled, killing 8 of them after they attempted to take selfies on the already overweight boat.
  9. Life threats because of the attempts to click exotic selfies at locations like cliffs, beaches, high rise buildings, boats, Safari parks, etc. have urged the administration to ban selfies in the dangerous tourist hotspots across the country.
  10. It’s okay to capture the special moments with your near and dear ones, but ask yourself, is anything that has turned into an obsession, okay? Is anything, that puts your life in danger, okay? Stop the “KILLFIE” trend before it's too late!
