  1. MEDIA RELEASE - FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
  2. THE FUTURE OF WHISTLEBLOWING
  3. The Media Direct has announced today the opening of a new online service
  4. designed to securely connect whistleblowers and journalists.
  5. “We live in an age where whistleblowers are more important than ever, but
  6. in which the technology used to blow the whistle has not kept pace with
  7. the technology used to stifle transparency,” said Luke McMahon, the
  8. Australian co-ordinator of the project.
  9. Created in collaboration between Australian information activists and
  10. programmers from GlobaLeaks, The Media Direct uses a multi-tiered security
  11. system which allows whistleblowers to deposit information in a secure
  12. dropbox via the TOR network, where it can then be accessed by the Media
  13. Direct journalist of their choice. These journalists are categorised by
  14. area of interest, in order for the whistleblower to direct their
  15. information to the most relevant party.
  16. Initial participants in the service include Crikey/New Matilda editor
  17. Marni Cordell, Crikey political editor Bernard Keane, award-winning
  18. investigative journalist Richard Baker from Fairfax, and The Australian’s
  19. Higher Education reporter Andrew Trounson.
  20. “You only need to look at the ICAC proceedings in New South Wales to see
  21. the benefit that comes to society from letting the sun shine in on
  22. undemocratic and criminal behaviour,” said McMahon, “it’s our hope that
  23. Media Direct will provide confidence to ordinary people wanting to expose
  24. information that is in the public interest.”
