How to chose between linux and windows
Linux and Windows are the operating system of the server on which the hosting plan is setup. The customer gets a control panel to use and manage the hosting account themselves.

Generally speaking, linux plans are easy and very user friendly compared to windows hosting plans. You can use a linux plan from your windows computer or notebook, there is no need to change the computer to linux OS. The linux control panel 'cPanel' is the easiest and most simple control panel to use.
There is no inferiority as such between windows and linux. If anything, linux is better since it allows you to host more than one domain on the same hosting plan, which is a feature not supported by windows.

Linux is also more secure than Windows hosting. I would recommend Linux over Windows any day.
For sure! however, if you are working with ASP and MS SQL, you dont have a choice In such cases, windows firewall is a must along with any other added protection.

The most significant difference between Linux and Windows is that in Linux we can access to the source code where as in windows we can't. Linux would be good for hosting.

Linux supports a wide range of software, applications, languages, and databases such as PHP, Perl, PostGre, MySQL, PostgreSQL and many others making it very scalable. On the downside, Linux is not fully compatible with some Microsoft technologies so if you are using Access, ASP, MS SQL, or VB development tools then Windows would be a better bet.

I'd recommend Windows if you are using ASP, .Net, MS SQL. I find Windows to be great and I am a lot more familiar with configuring the services and security etc...

Well Said. Agreed.
I would say windows vps is much much batter then linux hosting
vps server hosting √ Dedicated hardware √ MS Hyper-v Technology √
Basic Plan : RAM: 512 MB, CPU cores: 2, Disk space: 50 GB, Data transfer: 500 GB, [50 GB HDD FREE!], [500 GB BANDWITH FREE!],Operating System: Windows 2008 Enterprise (R2 also available), Price first month: $9.95
Linux is more open source, free, and robust in operation. It is cleanly coded and is very good for PHP and mySQL purposes for sure. It uses less resources for processing too.
Windows on the other hand, requires a license, and should really be only used if you need the specific coding like msSQL.
I prefer Linux as that is what I have on my 3 VPS.
