Both Descovy vs Truvada contain two drugs per single pill. Truvada and Descovy have one common active ingredient: emtricitabine. Both drugs also contain the active ingredient tenofovir, but in different chemical forms. Truvada contains tenofovir disoproxil fumarate, while Descovy contains tenofovir alafenamide.
Truvada and Descovy are both very effective at preventing HIV in people at risk for infection. Descovy is a newer medication that's safer for the kidneys and bone health, but it hasn't been studied in people at risk for HIV from receptive vaginal sex or injection drug use.
