  1. I like the generosity of numbers.
  2. The way, for example,
  3. they are willing to count
  4. anything or anyone:
  5. two pickles, one door to the room,
  6. eight dancers dressed as swans.
  7. I like the domesticity of addition--
  8. add two cups of milk and stir--
  9. the sense of plenty: six plums
  10. on the ground, three more
  11. falling from the tree.
  12. And multiplication's school
  13. of fish times fish,
  14. whose silver bodies breed
  15. beneath the shadow
  16. of a boat.
  17. Even subtraction is never loss,
  18. just addition somewhere else:
  19. five sparrows take away two,
  20. the two in someone else's
  21. garden now.
  22. There's an amplitude to long division,
  23. as it opens Chinese take-out
  24. box by paper box,
  25. inside every folded cookie
  26. a new fortune.
  27. And I never fail to be surprised
  28. by the gift of an odd remainder,
  29. footloose at the end:
  30. forty-seven divided by eleven equals four,
  31. with three remaining.
  32. Three boys beyond their mothers' call,
  33. two Italians off to the sea,
  34. one sock that isn't anywhere you look.
