A molecule is the smallest particle of matter that can exist independently. It consists of atoms held together by means of links. For example, the water molecule, two hydrogen atoms linked to an oxygen atom. The atoms are held together by electrical charges of particles of which they consist.
Atoms are rarely found in the free state. Typically, they communicate with each other and form a molecule or other more massive structures.
