Help in regard to renting a server

How does it work? The goal I"m trying to achieve is being able to provide people with links to downloads. I assume URLs of the companie's name and/or an IP address will be generated? I have to download an FTP application (any reccommendations?) and after the upload, a URL would be generated?

you can run ftp from windows..
simply open my computer or any folder.
in address bar type:
ftp://USERNAME:PASSWORD@yourwebsite.com:21/
or just ftp://youwebsite.com:21/
and youll be prompted to login.
also most hosting services renting servers have a support section with live chat.. also for FTP programs WS_FTP is good.
and as far as the hosting they usually have a whole webpage dedicated to managing files and links etc.
