  1. Cloud hosting as email server?
  2. New user here
  3. I have a cPanel shared hosting from an US based provider with 10GB disk. I have 100+ active email accounts there. Due to the limited disk space, I need to keep deleting emails. Now, I was thinking to get a cloud hosting from digitalocean or similar and use it as an email hosting to have more space and to have better control.

  13. Disk space is still a problem with the cloud. I was looking for at least 500GB space! Now, can I use the block storage as my email storage in cloud? I will use cPanel. So, if I take a 4GB ram cloud (80GB disk) and add 400-500GB block storage, will I be able to use that for my emails from cPanel? I do not plan to host my website there.
  14. Also, what will be a good solution for backup?
  15. By the way, if this is not a good plan, please suggest me something within $100 USD monthly budget (including backup). Preferred locations are USA or Singapore. I do not wish to use any mail exchange service like Gsuite etc.
  16. Thanks.
  17. If these emails are very important, then make sure you properly secure it and with that budget, it is not hard to get a VPS/Cloud or even a dedicated server if you can manage it yourself.
  18. With dedicated server, you can probably have more storage available.
  19. I would recommend against using cpanel just for email when other systems like Zimbra, Icewarp, etc are around. Zimbra is easy to install, though configuration can be a pain in more complex setups.
  20. For storage, at least with Zimbra you can set a mail store volume that points to a directory and you can then mount any block storage to that directory. For example, you could use a VPS from a reputable provider and either use that VPS's storage, that provider's block storage if they have, or remote storage that can be mounted. If you need to use another block storage instance, just add another volume. Using ZImbra's community edition saves you on licensing fees also compared to even the solo cpanel license.
  21. Though the initial setup and maintenance would require a system admin that has at least basic Linux knowledge but really any server should have one of those.

  27. Thanks, yes I guess I will get more space with dedicated server, but I am not sure if I can cover it all up within my budget.

  32. I will prefer cPanel, as it will be used by less techy people, who are now used to the cPanel, and won't like a new interface. Also, I can setup a cPanel server easily. Not sure how much I can do with the zimbra! cPanel pricing is pretty expensive though!
  33. About the block storage part, can I not use it in similar way in cPanel as well? Will it degrade the performance?
  34. If security is a concern you could use vmware or AWS. You can install vmware vsphere on a new server and get going. You can scale the app as per the data.
  35. Just make sure first that the ports aren't blocked as a lot of the larger companies like DO tend to block common ports that are used for spam/abuse and that they allow email hosting. As for backups an option would be to get a second server and have automatic transfers. You could either have cPanel transfer or create a script that compresses certain directories and FTP them to the server. Personally, id go with a second server for backups since it will be easier to manage and find old backups quickly. Also its a good idea for a second server incase you lose your server/hardware failure or even just simply accidentally deleting something (on original server). That way you won't harm the files on the backup server.
  36. Ive created scripts in the past that compress certain directories and name them with the date/time/any other information. You can also have the script delete files older than x days if you want to keep the backups within a certain timeframe so theres not thousands and thousands. You could set it as a cron job at 9am everyday or in intervals if you want it multiple times a day. Just an idea
  37. Hi,
  38. With a 100$ budget you can get a quad core dedicated server with plenty of RAM resources, SSD as primary disk for better speed and a second hard drive for backups. Cloudstorage for backups will cost you a lot.
  39. About the block storage part, can I not use it in similar way in cPanel as well? Will it degrade the performance?
  40. Each account has its own mail folder IIRC (don't use cpanel) and so you could mount the block storage to that mail folder. For multiple accounts, you would need to mount separately. Otherwise you could just use the VPS storage.
  41. As for Zimbra, the end users can use regular mail clients or use the webmail interface -- which is also the same interface they use to set settings such as away messages, mail forwards, remote mail pick ups, or share calendars or even share mail folders with others. If they want to use activesync / corp mail, you could add z-push to the server also and provide that so their phones sync calendars / contacts. Though the paid version handles that better from what I understand. And as you mentioned cloud, It also scales out as needed for different services.

  45. I have found this dedicated server from reliablesite.net:
  46. Intel Xeon E3 1230
  47. 32GB DDR3 Ram
  48. 64GB SSD + 2TB HDD
  49. USD $46/month
  50. How will this be, instead of a cloud server? Seems very cheap!

  57. It depends on what provider you go with. Even though thats a dedicated server its still a 2011 CPU and still a first version. Some providers still use old hardware and you could be placed on a node with old hardware or oversold but some use latest generation CPUs. You could get a lot more performance if you pick the right business with the right CPUs in their nodes.Hello,

  63. Thanks.
  64. Frankly for $100 USD for that amount of mailboxes with proper backups, you will struggle to get anything decent.
  65. Stick an extra 0 on the end of that budget and you would get Exchange with daily backups.
  66. With all the RBL lists around the place now a days I wouldn't even bother rolling your own solution just go with a Microsoft or Google partner and they can sort you out.
  67. Reason why I suggest a partner is because they will normally be able to give you bulk discounts on the licensing and include backups. Most of the cloud offerings don't include backups by default.
  68. If you are worried about having all your data on the public cloud partners can also set you up with either a Private cloud environment for your mail or a hybrid environment ware all the mail is stored on your own servers but then synced back to Office365 as an example.
  69. If you are set on $100 a month then IMap / Pop3 mail on a VPS running Cpanel or Plesk would be the way forward just get a decent spam filter such as Spam Experts to run over the top of it to prevent spam.

  74. How to "pick the right business"? With the budget I have, I don't think I get anything from some expensive-good-service providers.

  82. $1K per month beyond my budget. From my $1200 per year budget, I can move it up around $1500 or so. Even Google/Microsoft partners won't be able to offer that many email accounts within this price range. So a custom server is my best shot here. I will be using spam filter for sure.
  83. Don't go with a business who hides information from you as you have no idea what they are giving you. Many block the hardware names/models on a virtualisation level so its almost impossible to find the exact CPU. If they don't tell you what it is then they might be hiding something. Some say that they cannot tell you because "it varies from node to node" but they still cannot give any sort of information at all. <<snipped>>
  84. Have a look around at multiple providers and compare them. If you can get CPU or any other hardware information then compare it to the dedi above you noted (E3-1230). You might be able to find a cloud server that fits your requirements and if you have hardware information you may get a lot more performance from it than an old dedi. Make sure its KVM as well
  85. With that budget in mind, you might want to get a VPS from a reputable provider with plenty of space, install Ubuntu and then install Cloudron.io. It will do all the email server configuration for you, including MX, SPF, DKIM, DMARC...
  86. You get Cloudron for free with up to 2 apps, one of which could be SOGo or Rainloop so you have webmail. Cloudron also takes care of the updates and security itself.
  87. Very nice and easy to work with.
  88. Cheers!
  89. For emailing purposes, I hope that HDDs are enough. If you consider data security, maybe you can use hard drives in RAID format. If you go with a Dedicated Server, you'll save a lot compared to Cloud.
