  1. Is the scent of apple boughs smoking
  2. in the woodstove what I will remember
  3. of the Red Delicious I brought down, ashamed
  4. that I could not convince its limbs to render fruit?
  5. Too much neglect will do that, skew the sap's
  6. passage, blacken leaves, dry the bark and heart.
  7. I should have lopped the dead limbs early
  8. and watched each branch with a goshawk's eye,
  9. patching with medicinal pitch, offering water,
  10. compost and mulch, but I was too enchanted
  11. by pear saplings, flowers and the pasture,
  12. too callow to believe that death's inevitable
  13. for any living being unloved, untended.
  14. What remains is this armload of applewood
  15. now feeding the stove's smolder. Splendor
  16. ripens a final time in the firebox, a scarlet
  17. harvest headed, by dawn, to embers.
  18. Two decades of shade and blossoms - tarts
  19. and cider, bees dazzled by the pollen,
  20. spare elegance in ice - but what goes is gone.
  21. Smoke is all, through this lesson in winter
  22. regret, I've been given to remember.
  23. Smoke, and Red Delicious apples redder
  24. than a passing cardinal's crest or cinders.
