Sony has acquired the distribution rights to make a film based on the famous video game 'Angry Birds', due out on July 1, 2016 , the Japanese electronics giant announced Wednesday.
The film will be produced and financed by the Finnish software company Rovio, creator of the game - which is a card including smartphones - which wants to keep full control over the final product.
'Sony impressed us with his attitude, determination and professionalism,' said Mikael Hed, CEO of Rovio Entertainment. "They convinced us that we had found the right partners and the right team to help us to produce and distribute our first film '.
For the production of the film, Rovio has hired John Cohen, producer of the animated film 'Me Despicable' and David Maisel, former chairman of Marvel Studios, as executive producer.
'Angry Birds', which involves catapulting angry birds against the scaffolding built by green pigs who stole their eggs, has become since its launch smartphone in 2009 one of the biggest franchises in video games.
"We are proud to distribute the film and we hope this is only the beginning of a long collaboration with Rovio, with which we plan to work on other projects in the future", welcomed Michael Lynton, Executive Director of Sony Pictures entertainment, and the company president Amy Pascal, in a joint statement.
This 3D animated film should enable Rovio to create his own animation studio and may compete with the Disney studios, explained to AFP in December Mikael Hed.
